2021.09.25 07:23 Tabworu Have you ever wondered where the S² engines get all that energy? (ANIMA Spoilers [kinda])
So I'm reading NGE ANIMA, the english light novel quintology from 2019, and oh my god!! Definitely a recommended read for any hardcore evangelion fans like me. Putting that aside though, the novels explain the mechanisms through which the S² engines can produce nearly infinite energy. As a long time Evangelion fan, I really appreciated the depth of the explanation as well as its plausability in quantum physics. This is going to be a rather in-depth explanation, so I hope you're well equipped to read. For instance, this might not make a lot of sense if you don't understand the Evangelion multiverse. So first, let's talk about the multiverse theory that Evangelion assumes, at least in ANIMA: brane cosmology.
Brane cosmology proposes a multiverse type model, with our 3D universe making up one of several 'branes' inside the bulk. The bulk is essentially some sort of higher-dimensional space where other branes/universes move around each other gravitationally. Brane cosmology also separates gravity from the 3 other fundamental forces (the strong and weak molecular forces + electromagnetism). The other 3 forces are contained specifically in the brane, which is why they are so observably strong, but gravity is a force that propagates throughout the entire bulk/multiverse. That's why gravity appears to be the weakest fundamental force in our universe. Gravitational energy is essentially "leaking" out of the branes into the bulk, which is why the branes are moving and sometimes we see extradimensional occurrences in our universe (our universe colliding with other branes). One of these extradimensional occurrences could have been the creation of our brane/universe from the collision of two other branes.
In Evangelion, the S² engines/drives are inherited by the Angels as children of Adam, the first angel who bears the fruit of life (opposed to Lilith's fruit of knowledge that humanity inherited). The S² engine is the manifestation of the fruit of life and allows angels to produce and shape infinite energy. The shaping part isn't too much of a mystery (the libido/destrudo psychological forces of the soul). But where does the energy come from?
Turns out S² engines capture the gravitational energy that is leaking out of our universe into the multiverse. That's what powers them. It's an extradimensional powerhouse that exists in both the brane AND the bulk, allowing it to suck in gravitational energy from the multiverse. Kind of like a wormhole. The name, Super-Solenoid (S²) engine, also has some meaning in this regard. Solenoid is a biological term to describe the double-helix structure of chromatin (recall Ritsuko's remark that, despite being comprised of different matter, angel and human genetic information looked essentially identical). Now, read the following paragraph from ANIMA vol. 1:
"Scans of the S² engine revealed two helixes entwined into a nearly perfect spherical mass. In three-dimensional space, this structure looked messy and inelegant, but when represented mathematically in two-dimensional space modeled on brane cosmology, the shape looked like a wadded-up cloth opening out, with right antennae-like structures radiating into the braneworld."
Here we see the significance of that name, and what Misato's father had likely discovered when he named the structure. It is solenoid like DNA but crosses dimensional barriers, hence the name Super-Solenoid. In summary, the S² engines are basically DNA-like structures that bridge the brane with the bulk and allow energy to be moved freely from the bulk, where gravitational energy exists in excess, into the brane.
This shit is absolutely fascinating to me. I've been into Eva for a long time because of its complexity and basis in real scientific principles, so reading ANIMA has filled in a HUGE mystery for me. I hope you guys appreciate this as much as I did.

2021.09.25 07:23 Utini5000 Megastructures and Research in General
How do you build them? I’m 147 years into the game and I still haven’t had the option despite having many many research options. How does research even work in this game? In some playthroughs I unlock battleships and higher tier ships within the first century of gameplay and some games I’ve had to build mega fleets of corvettes just to survive while the AI has cruisers. Is it just RNG? Is there a visible or non-visible technology pathway? Also, why is it that when I make fleet designs and then reinforce them, sometimes I just get an assload of tiny mini fleets? I’m just lost. Why even give you a fleet design if you’re just going to go over the number of fleets I allotted for you or just straight up build hundreds of mini fleets of one or two ships?

2021.09.25 07:23 fgirt Whoever chose the celebrities for the third season of Celebrity IOU is clearly in need of psychiatric help.
I loved the first two seasons of Celebrity IOU. The third season, not so much, at least the first four episodes.
Episode 1: The rich women who are famous for no reason and use social media to give other women inferiority complexes about their bodies.
Episode 2: The home-wrecker who makes rape jokes, has foot-in-mouth syndrome, and taunts the woman whose life she stole.
Episode 3: The half-pint “comedian” that threatened to beat the crap out if his son if he turned out to be gay, and told someone they were the face of AIDS.
Episode 4: The woman who tells other women they are worthless unless they buy her vagina-scented candles and jade vagina eggs. Sells snake oil to uneducated masses.
Just a whole lotta yikes from me.

2021.09.25 07:23 One_Bell beginner struggling through 6.00.1x problem, please help
Discussion boards on course are currently closed for mid-term, I am only auditing and 2 weeks behind so this has nothing to do with mid-term, but I have nowhere else to get help right now. Thanks!
I am working on the 'is in' problem. I am getting a syntax error and I don't understand why. I am able to look at the answer for the exercise, so it's not that I need anyone to tell me the correct code for this problem, rather I need help understanding what part of my code causes this syntax error.
We can use the idea of bisection search to determine if a character is in a string, so long as the string is sorted in alphabetical order.
First, test the middle character of a string against the character you're looking for (the "test character"). If they are the same, we are done - we've found the character we're looking for!
If they're not the same, check if the test character is "smaller" than the middle character. If so, we need only consider the lower half of the string; otherwise, we only consider the upper half of the string. (Note that you can compare characters using Python's
def isIn(char, aStr):
if char == aStr[mid]:
if char > aStr[mid]:
return isIn(char, aStr[(mid+1):]
return isIn(char, aStr[:mid]
I am getting Error: invalid syntax line 11 (which is the last else: line)

2021.09.25 07:23 Careless_Rock_9814 Mini Base: how to sanely edit the filament sensor holder STL?
The issue with the holder is that it doesn’t fit properly. On the right top side (looking at it mounted, facing the printer), a screw head sticks out of the sensor itself and it butts against the holder. This keeps the sensor from sitting flush in the holder grove and from being properly retained while printing.
I wanted to make a hole for the screw head but it being an stl, solidworks won’t let me do an extruded cut on it. I’ve spent a few hours trying to turn it into a solid body to achieve tha but nope.
So, more generally, what’s a same workflow for editing an stl overall? They’re such a pain and the author rarely share the step file or anything else than (uneditable) stl files.

2021.09.25 07:23 RagingRamenT_T How to tell if someone likes me (like a friend)
Help I’m socially awkward!
I met this girl at my university orientation. Talked a bit. I Dmed her about homework and we talked a little to. I haven’t talked to her in about a week in person. When ever I walk by her she’s always with a friend or brother or something so I can’t talk to her. Today she sent me a picture of her hamster.
I really would love a friend but I don’t want to come on to strong. I also don’t want to seem like I’m uninterested. I also don’t want to seem like I’m hitting on her. Also can you mass dm people? Do I try to join the conversation with her and that guy. HELP me!

2021.09.25 07:23 TwystedZang Any suggestions for removing urethane from a 3d printed mold?
Hi all, I'm fairly new to casting, and I recently casted a mold using Flex foam III expanding foam, and a 3D printed mold I created. I used some silicone mold release spray in an attempt to make the foam stick less to the mold when finished, however it didn't seem to have much of an effect. I was wondering if there's any way to remove the rest of the foam from this mold, and if y'all had any suggestions for how to avoid this in the future. Thank you! https://i.imgur.com/vd5obur.jpg
